George III Mahogany Side Table, c. 1780–1800
A refined George III period side table or writing table, crafted in richly figured mahogany and dating to the late 18th century. The rectangular top with a slight overhang features canted corners and displays an aged patina with desirable surface wear, including period shrinkage cracks and ring marks. The table houses two cockbeaded drawers with hand-cut dovetail joints and later brass bail handles, all framed by delicate line inlay. Raised on elegant square tapering legs, the piece is well-proportioned and exudes the understated elegance characteristic of the Hepplewhite style. Rich in age charm and character, it would be a stunning addition to just the right space.

There is an interior area to the back panel that looks to have suffered water damage very long ago--it is in a strange location so it is possible that the piece was constructed with a piece of damaged wood since it can't be seen and doesn't impact the piece's stability at all--it's a bit of a mystery and not something I have come across before. There are other detectable imperfections, including surface blemishes, cracks, dings, dents and stains--including the already mentioned rings. Structurally sound and full of period charm, this table would serve beautifully as a hall table, writing desk, or side table in a traditional or eclectic interior. less
