This is a beautiful jar by famed Hopi potter Carla Claw Nampeyo. This jar features a carved and painted depiction of a Hopi Katsina (or Kachina) figure, characterized by a helmet-style mask, feathered headdress, and stylized geometric patterns. Katsinam are spirit beings central to Hopi religion, believed to bring rain, fertility, and blessings, and they appear in ceremonial dances to teach, guide, and connect the Hopi people with the spiritual world.
Carla Claw Nampeyo is a Hopi-Tewa of the Snow Clan. She is from the First Mesa village of Shungopavi and is the daughter of Thomas Polacca Nampeyo, sister to Gary Polacca Nampeyo, Fannie Myron, Delmar Polacca and Elvira Naha. The granddaughter of Fannie Polacca Nampeyo and the Great-granddaughter of Nampeyo. She has been an active potter since the mid-1970s.
Carla is known for her incised pottery and the use of slips that give the appearance of wood to the surface of her pottery. The piece is signed on the bottom, “Carla Nampeyo.”
