Item description:
beautiful glazed and vitrified hard-paste porcelain vase with cobalt blue glaze, signed under the base by radler & pilz, with a blue heraldic shield under glaze placed upside down compared to the mark of the imperial manufactory in vienna. The vase comes with a silver-plated metal vase holder in the shape of a lattice basket, in the austrian style of the vienna secession, by artists such as josef hoffmann. The metal basket is signed under the base with the initials w.r.w.g.f. Engraved, which unfortunately we do not know exactly which manufacturer it refers to, and then with the words "e. P. S." engraved, which stands for "electro patled silver," or electroplated silver. This particular type of silver plating is obtained by immersing the metal in a saline solution together with a silver plate, then using electrodes to detach the silver from the plate and deposit it evenly on the metal basket. The vase can be dated to the early 20th century, and we are inclined to attribute its authorship to josef hoffmann.
useful information for evaluating the item:
our research shows that josef hoffmann's highest auction result in the furniture category is over €120,000, while the highest auction result in the objects category is €40,000, which gives an idea of this artist's importance. Objects very similar to ours, all made by hoffmann with mainly glass vases, equipped with a silver-plated metal support or base, are all listed or sold at auction at very high prices, ranging from €1,500 for the smallest and simplest to over €5,000. Finally, it should be noted that josef hoffmann created many objects with this latticework shape, from baskets to glasses to saucers, etc., of which he was probably the main creator.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the radler & pilz factory was founded in 1864, when the imperial factory in vienna closed its doors for good. It was the only factory that continued to use its trademark, namely the heraldic shield, still in blue enamel, but placed upside down, exactly as it appears on the mark under our vase. The last photo shows historical information about the factory in french, for those who wish to learn more, with the same mark present under our object, as evidence of what has been stated.
josef franz maria hoffmann (brtnice, 1870 – vienna, 1956) was one of austria's leading architects, active between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Hoffmann is considered one of the greatest ceramists and artists of the viennese secession. He founded the wiener werkstatte together with koloman moser and absorbed michael powolny's wiener keramik, with whom he collaborated for many decades. in 1987, the museum für angewandte kunst (mak) in vienna organized an exhibition in his honor. The museum still has a permanent exhibition of his works and also organizes special exhibitions on the architect and his contemporaries.
