A Man's Special Occasion Poncho collected in Ambato, Tungurahua Province, Central Ecuador circa 1940-50s. The finely woven poncho was hand-sewn from two large matching panels, each with three vertical white bands consisting of multiple stripes on an indigo blue background. Two alternate motifs of white diamond patterns run along the vertical line. While a sandwiched thin band feature a subtle resist-dye blurring, the diamond motifs showcase a more striking ikat pattern along the dimension of the warps. Red fringes were applied along the peripheral edges and red piping also lined the neckline.
Ikat woven poncho is of a traditional Incan stye from Pre-Columbian South America. Indigenously developed and independent from its counterparts in Asia and Africa, the technique is nevertheless similarly difficult and labor-intensive. Therefore, the ikat garments were always kept as precious heirlooms and worn only on special occasions such as at the weddings. Since 1940s, the ikat weaving has become gradually obsolete. Even traditional attires such as ponchos and ruanas have been increasingly replaced by western clothes. A well-preserved period piece like this poncho has become rarer. The garment can be framed as a textile art, but it is perfect to be worn as a bespoken fashion piece for both men and women.
Provenance: From an important American textile collection.
For a very similar indigo blue and white Ikat Poncho, compared to Object number A.1984.531.3 in the collection of Museum of International Folk Art (e-Museum site).
