It’s nicely done with fine detail … Read more A nicely cast bronze Neoclassical Grand Tour souvenir of the Herculaneum Athlete or Runner. It’s nicely done with fine detail and has a Panama Pacific Exposition label on the base, which dates it to at least 1915, when the expo took place. I believe it’s actually late 19th century. The Herculaneum Runner is a bronze statue of an athlete in a winning position. It was discovered in the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, Italy in the 18th century. The original is in the Naples National Archaeological Museum.
The Chiurazzi foundry in Naples made a cast of the original in the early 20th century.
The bronze is in good overall condition with nice patina. There some nicks and scratches and rub marks to the finish See less
