Signed and dated '1956' lower right. … Read more A Hari Van Hoeffen (American, 1905-1985) oil on board painting depicting an abstract composition. Signed and dated '1956' lower right. Presented in a white wood frame with an inner blue border. Hari Van Hoefen was a renowned architect, engineer, and artist based in St. Louis during the mid-20th century. He's most known for his architectural designs and was a recipient of the American Institute of Architects Award in 1953 and 1957. His artwork was heavily influenced by his design experience, which included traditional, abstract, and art deco styles along with mixed media that fused paint, wood, plaster, and metal. Several of his pieces incorporate old, arcane medical instruments, which he welded into new shapes and characters. It's not clear whether Van Hoefen was recognized for his fine art during his lifetime, as most of his pieces were kept in the family. He passed away in 1985
