Description of the item:
Glazed, vitrified and lustre-finished majolica plate and stand, entirely modeled and decorated by hand, with a large maple leaf in bas-relief in the center, signed under the base with an incised mark, made by the English manufacturer George Jones in the late 19th century. The patina covering the two objects is excellent, especially under the base, perfectly in line with our dating. In the last photos, we have included some of the numerous marks used by this manufacturer, including those found under the two objects offered.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
George Jones' majolica pieces are among the most important English majolica pieces of the 19th century, along with those made by the Minton factory. These majolica pieces, especially those for the table, are auctioned at very high prices, ranging from a minimum of €300-400, even for single plates similar to ours, up to several thousand euros for larger and more important pieces. To give you an idea of the importance of this English manufacturer, consider that, according to our research, a large George Jones teapot was sold at auction for $52,000 by Christie's auction house.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
A manufacturer of earthenware, majolica, and porcelain in Stoke-on-Trent, George Jones began a seven-year apprenticeship with Minton at the age of 14. After completing his apprenticeship in 1844, he worked as a traveling salesman for Wedgwood. George began manufacturing around 1861 as George Jones & Co. In 1872, he began producing porcelain. In 1873, his two eldest sons, Frank Ralph Jones and George Henry Jones, became partners in the business, which was renamed George Jones & Sons. "Crescent" was registered as a trademark for the new company. At that time, the company had 590 employees. In 1957, George Jones & Sons Ltd ceased trading, and in 1959, the Crescent works were demolished.
