Item description:
A magnificent, enormous Orientalist sculpture in polychrome patinated terracotta, entirely modeled and glazed by hand, depicting an African water carrier. Made by the Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider. This manufacturer is famous worldwide for this type of Orientalist sculpture, made in the late 19th century, such as this one, which are the ones that have fetched the highest prices at auction. The sculpture is attributable to Friedrich Goldscheider, founder and leading exponent of the manufacturer. The sculpture is very large, measuring 64 cm in height and weighing over 9 kg. The object can be dated to the late 19th century, around 1890, and the evident patina covering the work confirms our dating.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our research shows that for larger, full-length Orientalist sculptures by Goldscheider such as this one, the four highest results achieved range from €11,000 to over €23,000, excluding auction fees of 25-30%. Ours is slightly smaller, although still quite large, and for sculptures of similar dimensions to ours, auction results range from €3,000 to €8,000, to which auction fees of 25-30% must be added. A very rare, important, and collectible sculpture.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Austrian Goldscheider factory was founded in 1885 by the famous entrepreneur and artist Friedrich Goldscheider and remained active until 1954. This manufacturer is considered one of the most important ceramics and terracotta manufacturers of the late 1800s and early 1900s in Europe, collaborating with the most important sculptors and ceramists of the time, such as Lorenzl, Dakon, Knorlein, Meisinger, Goebel, Cherc, Rosè, and many others.
Weight of the sculpture: 9.051 kg
