Item description:
Beautiful, large glazed and vitrified ceramic jug, entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel and decorated entirely by hand, with floral decorations and a central portrait depicting a Roman soldier with a scroll behind him bearing the name of the subject portrayed, "Mario," which probably stands for Gaius Marius, a very important Roman general and politician who was consul of the Roman Republic seven times. The object is finished with high-quality metallic glazes, which give the ceramic surface a rainbow effect when touched by light. The jug was made by Icap in Gualdo Tadino, an important manufacturer in Gualdo, and is signed under the base with one of its first marks.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Our research shows that the Icap factory in Guado Tadino boasts considerable auction results, considering that a vase with a lustre finish was auctioned in 2011 for €600-800. We also found a blue vase without a lustre finish, and therefore of lower value than ours, which is finished with lustre, offered at €500, and another slightly larger, but similar to ours, also finished with lustre and with a central portrait, offered at €700, all to give an idea of the value of ceramics from this manufacturer.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The "Bottega Ceramica" artistic ceramics factory was founded around 1920 by the sons of ceramist Giuseppe Pascucci (first of that name), Angelo (the second of that name) and Fernando, in Gualdo Tadino, in the province of Perugia, on the ashes of the old family factory "Fabbrica di Maioliche Artistiche e Commerciali" (Artistic and Commercial Majolica Factory), formerly owned by Angelo Pascucci (the first of that name). In 1925, the company took the name "I.C.A.P." (Industria Ceramica Angelo Pascucci), in honor of their grandfather. Specializing in the production of traditional Gualdo-style ceramics and copies of antique pieces, the factory remained active until 1932 when Fernando left the factory and moved to Gubbio. Angelo (the second of that name) continued the business and changed the company name to "I.C.A.P.-Unione Operai Ceramisti" (I.C.A.P.-Ceramic Workers' Union), until 1934, when it became simply "Unione Operai Ceramisti" (Ceramic Workers' Union). After the war, Angelo (the second of that name) re-founded "I.C.A.P.," based in Via 5 Luglio 9-19 in Gualdo Tadino, together with Luigi Morelli and Enzo Remigi who, assisted by highly skilled workers, started a semi-industrial production of artistic ceramics with metallic glazes, made without the use of the traditional muffle kiln. Among the most important collaborators of the factory were Giovanni Marini and Renzo Megni.
