Item description:
glazed and vitrified ceramic plate, entirely hand-decorated, fired at high temperature, with the outer rim decorated with foliage and shells on a blue background, while the center is decorated with a heraldic shield surrounded by stars on a light blue background with the initials of the person who commissioned the plate, "giuseppe kibel." in fact, the letters "g" and "k" are present inside the shield, probably representing a noble family. On the back, in addition to giuseppe kibel, there is also the date of manufacture, "june 1887," and the signature of the artist, "br. Gregori."
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
founded as a brick factory in 1840 by vincenzo guerra in sant'antonio, near treviso, in 1843, upon vincenzo's death, the company passed under the management of his widow regina guerra, who also began producing household goods and furnishings, entrusting the management of the factory to her second husband bartolomeo gregorj. In 1887, management of the factory passed to their son gregorio gregorj, who entrusted the artistic section to numerous young artists, including angelo bonotto, mario and guido cacciapuoti, arturo malossi, giuseppe rosetti, piero murani, luigi serena, antonio carlini, cesare laurenti, and alberto martini. Between 1908 and 1912, he worked at the arturo martini factory.
after the first world war, due to gregorio's poor health, management passed to his sons giorgio and alfredo, who added to the traditional production the creation of decorative coverings and religious works, often designed and created by arturo molossi. In 1930, the factory presented some of arturo malossi's works at the international exhibition in barcelona, winning a gold medal.
after world war ii, management of the company passed into the hands of mario gregorj, a painter and sculptor. From the early 1950s, the designer giuseppe santomaso collaborated with the company, designing a number of decorations for building tiles. The factory remained active until 1963.
