Item description:
Sculpture, hard-paste porcelain figurine, glazed, entirely hand-decorated, created by Thekla Harth-Altmann, an Austrian artist born in 1887 and died in 1968, for Rosenthal, one of the most important German manufacturers of the early decades of the 20th century. Signed under the base with the name of the manufacturer in green underglaze. Engraved on the back is the name of the subject depicted, "Johanna Terwin," a famous German actress, and the artist's signature. The ceramic mixture of the sculpture is of the highest quality, rich in feldspars that have allowed for thick and brilliant vitrification.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our research has shown that auction results for figurines similar to ours, made by this artist, range from a minimum of €300-400 to €1,000-1,300, excluding auction fees of 25-30%. Our own sculpture was sold at auction back in 2001 for €460, excluding auction fees of 25-30%. Bear in mind that in 2001, the euro had just come into force as the European national currency, so the auction price of €460, adjusted for inflation, would undoubtedly be much higher today.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
In 1879, after returning from an experience in the United States, Philipp Rosenthal decided to open a porcelain decoration workshop in Erkersreuth, near Selb, Bavaria. In 1907, the company began to mark each product with its own name. The following year, Rosenthal acquired Thomas, a brand later aimed at a younger audience. Being Jewish, Philipp Rosenthal came under pressure from the Nazis and in 1934 left the management of the company, which nevertheless continued to expand during the First and Second World Wars. In 1950, his son Philip took over the reins of the company, which in 1961 launched Rosenthal Studio-Line, a brand dedicated to projects and collaborations with famous artists, architects, and designers. In 1993, the Rosenthal meets Versace line was launched. In 1997, Rosenthal AG was acquired by Waterford Wedgwood, which in 2003 acquired the Hutschenreuther brand, founded in 1814. In 2009, Rosenthal was acquired by the Italian company Sambonet Paderno Industrie. In May 2021, the Coppo family, owners of the company, appointed an external CEO, Mads Ryder from Denmark.
