New York, 1964. Photojournalist Nat Finkelstein was invited by Pagaent magazine to immortalize the Pop Art scene of the 1960s on glossy paper. For three years, between 1964 and 1967, the New Yorker charted Andy Warhol in his Silver Factory that he opened on January 28, 1964. A hive of artists and provocateurs alike, the studio on the fifth floor of 231 East 47th Street went down in history, at once artists' space, gallery, projection room and nightclub.
Stripped of all inhibition, the Factory witnessed some fall at the hands of hedonism, yet saw New York’s counter-culture rise. It was this side of the Silver Factory that Nat Finkelstein captured in a series of vibrant photographs. He immortalized what was a legendary incubator for the underground arts scene, where figures from Edie Sedgwick and Bob Dylan, to Marcel Duchamp and Lou Reed once frequented.
Over time, The Factory changed locations (there were 3 venues in total, always in Manhattan). The first of them, the one we see in the image, was the first one, called the Silver Factory because it was covered with silver paint, tinfoil, and pieces of broken mirrors. Glitter, lots of glitter, for an avant-garde environment where people lived and created at full speed. And in the broken mirrors, the reflection of an era.
This picture was part of the recent exhibition on Nat Finkelsteins’ work: In and Out of Warhol’s Orbit: Photographs by Nat Finkelstein at Proud Central, London.
Photo is also documented in Warhol by Finkelstein (not included).
