Born in Bronxville, New York, Sandback studied philosophy at Yale University before pursuing art, earning an MFA from Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1969. There, he was influenced by minimalist pioneers like Donald Judd and Robert Morris, as well as the teachings of Josef Albers.

Sandback is best known for his groundbreaking approach to sculpture, using simple materials like yarn, string, or wire to create geometric shapes that define and interact with space.
