Small Primitive Vintage/Antique Mirror with unique patina and beveled edge with some old chips to the edge that add to the charm. It has a simple, un-adorned design, held together with light-colored wood on the bottom, clamped together with old metal clips to a very old piece of dark plywood backing.
On top in the middle is a small round eyelet to hang the mirror. On the bottom in the middle is a small hole indicative of there might have been a hook to hang a towel - which could be added again and used in a rustic or shabby chic bathroom.
Patina on antique mirrors is caused by the natural aging process of the mirror's reflective surface, which is typically made of silver. Over time, the silver layer can oxidize and deteriorate, leading to a distinctive aged appearance. This process can be accelerated by exposure to moisture, humidity, and other environmental factors, adding to the assumption that it was used in a bathroom. The patina can manifest as dark spots, discoloration, or a general haze that gives antique mirrors their unique and charming look.
Looks like someone, a long time ago, fashioned it out of an antique broken mirror and an old piece of wood, on an old plywood back. The mirror breakage can be seen on the lower left side, where they filled in the gap with candle wax. Black grease smudges under the bottom edge suggests perhaps it was used in the bathroom of a workshop?
It's an intriguing piece, a conversation starter that always prompted a lot of comments and questions from guests.
The mirror's surface has some imperfections, such as scratches and spots, suggesting its age.
The mirror is likely an antique, possibly from the early 20th century, given its style and condition. Presumably re-purposed into it's current configuration earliest in the 30's or 40's, or possibly later in the 50s.
The mirror comes from an old farm in San Pasqual Valley, California.
Vintage mirrors like this can fit into various styles, such as French-style, shabby chic, farmhouse, or rustic. These mirrors can be used as decorative accents in homes, adding a touch of vintage charm and intrigue to any room.
