Beijing, China
One carved little vessel gets its vibrant color from cinnabar, the name for Chinese lacquer. It is elaborately carved with scenes of an ordinary life in China, showing moments from a time gone by. The yellow variation is truly unique among the many snuff bottles I’ve found. It is rare to find one so feminine in both its colorations and its design-- In all my research I have not found another one like it.
The lyrical motifs of ribbons, bows, and flowers make one believe it was made for a woman—perhaps for a courtesan or lover. It’s fun to guess.
These 2 bottles are a set where they complement each other with their colorations and their shapes.
** We do not hold these out as having great historic value. We can verify their origin but not the date when they were made. They are beautiful to behold and that is all.
