A Large Finely Painted Carved Red Lacquer Circular Box and Cover
Qing Dynasty, 18th–19th Century
This exceptional red lacquer circular box and cover exemplify the sophisticated artistry of the Qing dynasty, presenting a composition that is both symbolically charged and visually arresting.
At the center of the domed lid is a large, vividly rendered dragon painted in deep blue, its limbs and body coiled with fluid energy as it chases a flaming pearl—a traditional symbol of wisdom, enlightenment, and imperial power. The dragon's five claws identify it as an imperial dragon, directly associated with the emperor. Set against a cinnabar red lacquer ground, the contrast enhances the sense of motion and authority.
Surrounding the central figure are four additional dragons, likely rendered in beige or white tones, weaving dynamically through a celestial scene of stylized cloud formations and cresting waves. These motifs, painted in soft whites and creams, evoke the union of sky and sea—framing the dragons with natural and divine forces. The waves crash and swirl beneath the dragons, while the clouds drift overhead, creating a rhythmic visual field full of movement and balance.
The design is painted with some etching carving, with fine brushwork visible in the detailing of the dragon’s scales and the feathered softness of the clouds. The lacquer has matured over time, showing areas of wear and natural oxidation that mellow the brightness of the original red, giving the piece a warm, leathery patina that enhances its antique charm.
A scroll-incised border encircles the lid, punctuated by evenly spaced black metal tacks that provide both visual contrast and structural integrity—suggesting a utilitarian object of high craftsmanship, likely intended for regular ceremonial or elite use.
The box’s rounded sides continue the celestial motif, with five dragons along the upper sides and five more on the lower base, each depicted in motion amid elaborate scrollwork and stylized clouds. In total, fifteen dragons animate the surface of the box—with the Chinese symbol of imperial power and celestial dominance spaced between the dragons.
There is a Chinese symbol repeating on the sides 壽 (shòu) alternating between the dragons, which means "longevity" or "long life." It is often used in Chinese culture to wish for a long and healthy life and is commonly found in art, decorations, and celebratory items like this “Wedding Jewelry Dowry Lacquer Box.” The surrounding designs, like the dragon, clouds, and scroll pattern symbolize power, good fortune, and prosperity, which complement the theme of longevity.
A black-lacquered tact band circles the foot ring, elegantly framing the composition. The interiors and base are finished in a smooth, high-gloss black lacquer.

Symbolism: Chinese Symbol (longevity) Imperial dragons (power, protection), clouds and waves (divine and natural realms), flaming pearl (cosmic truth, immortality)
