John Angée
Miami artist John Angée was born in Medellin, Colombia in 1958, he began his art education at a very young age at the School of Fine Arts in his native city. Upon moving to the US in 1983, he continued his training first in the Miami Dade College where he received an Associate Degree in Art, and then, in 1993 a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts in Painting at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. In 1993 he goes to study a specialization in Painting Techniques at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux in Paris, France, returning in 1994.
To advance his education, John went back to school in the year 2000 to study architecture, again at the Florida International University where he received a Master of Architecture degree in 2005.
John Angée is a strong contemporary artist who uses his life experiences and education as part of his art production, he incorporates architecture, painting and sculpture to produce monumental pieces of art that are statements of his talent and his rich cultural background.
John’s most recent work is a series of monumental sculptures titled Passages, which are made out of steel and finished with vibrant colorful patinas, Passages represents the entrance to a different place that suggest change. Just by making a decision and taking the steps to get to the other side, we can change our lives, and John tries to make this statement in a dramatic way by dividing the road in two and placing a doorway in the middle. We need to think, to reflect in which way to go, and then make the decision and walk the way, but there is a point where our decisions to go in certain directions get more certain and more definitive, like a momentum in our lives that changes everything, at that point we pass an invisible door to our goals. These pieces represent these doors that, although invisible, are powerful and unique to each individual. The tough, rough, strong characteristics of the pieces made out of steel, insinuate the dimensions of the powerful moment in which we make those decisions, and cross the invisible doors with our intentions and acts to get to the other side.
His work is part of many collections including: The South Florida Museum of Hispanic and Latin American Art in Miami, Florida. The New World School of the Arts in Miami, The Vanidades International Publishing Group in Miami, Turbana Corporation in Miami, Univision Radio in Miami, Martin Aviation Group, Miami. Tapestry Partners in Miami, The Bravo Group, NY, Club Mom, NY, Patronato Colombiano de Artes y Ciencias, Bogota, Colombia, and other public and private collections around the world.
