A 1980 photograph by the American photographer Bruce Cratsley (1944-1988). Titled "Hidden Statue, Louvre, Paris," this black and white photograph depicts an exterior wall of the Louvre with a stark shadow slanting across it. A faintly visible statute of a standing figure in a recessed nook is visible near the center of the photograph. Unframed, the photograph is mounted to heavy paper and signed, dated, and titled to the verso. The photograph is also numbered II/XXXV to the verso.
Bruce Cratsley was an American photographer that graduated from Swarthmore College in 1966. He worked as a gallerist for 20 years, before becoming a full-time photographer in 1986. In 1988, Cratsley was awarded with a Guggenheim Fellowship. Cratsley followed the LGBTQA+ scene in New York throughout the AIDS epidemic, capturing important cultural events including the New York City LGBT Pride March and the first Wigstock. Today, his works belong in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Harvard Art Library.
