Here we have a beautiful antique Aesthetic Movement English (sepia brown over off-white) transferware covered vegetable dish or tureen.
This is the eternally popular DAFFODIL pattern by W. H. Grindley & Co. Hallmark on the underside of the lid which bears the early Diamond Registry stamp dating the piece to 1882. The overall design consists people enjoying gorgeous lakeside manors with tons of flowers and foliage. Twig-like decorated handles, a border which consists of repeating panels of large blooming daffodils, leaves and geometric patterns round out the composition.
This covered vegetable dish measures 11.75 inches wide handle to handle x 7.5 inches across front to back x 5.5 inches tall to the top of the lid handle.
Truly amazing condition given it's age and use. Even crazing throughout and some very light staining. I find two spots of rough glaze on the rim of the bowl and one spot that looks like a potting flaw. One tight hairline about an inch long on the top edge of the bowl and what looks like ink transfer on the inside rim of the lid. Excepting the hairline, crazing and stains, the other spots mentioned look like they occurred at the factory and not damage. These issues have been photographed, please examine the magnified pics.
This piece would make a truly lovely addition to any cottage, old farmhouse or transferware collection... thanks for looking!!!
