English pottery Hammersley & Co. was founded in Stoke-On-Trent in 1862 and was known for their high end bone china, often featuring botanically inspired patterns. Indeed, their work was of such quality that they produced china for Tiffany & Co. eventually merging with Spode in the latter half of the 20th Century.
This piece, an elegant egg-shaped lidded box, features Hammersley's whimsical 'Clover' pattern in vibrant pink and green on pure white bone china with a gilded border around the top and bottom halves of the box and lid. Even the interior is decorated with one sweet clover flower. The 'Clover' pattern was made from approximately 1920 - 1940. This box is also unique in its size, it is larger than most egg-shaped boxes - please see the approximate measurements below. This box is a celebration of spring and Easter but is beautiful enough to keep out all year long. This decorative piece would be perfect for a boudoir or bedroom as a trinket/jewelry box.
Measurements: Approximate and measured at widest/highest points - 4 3/8" Length x 3" Height x 3.5" Width.
Condition: Very good condition with no chips or cracks. There is a small underglaze flaw at the edge of the lid near the pointed end of the egg, you will see it pictured in the accompanying photos. There is light, minor damage to the pattern in a few spots, as well as very minor loss of gilding in a few small spots. There are a few dark storage marks around the base of the egg (see photos). Feel free to message with additional questions or if you'd like more photos.
