Eggleston's use of various mediums and techniques show throughout this abstract. In the top left black, lines are created in a wave-like image by scratching of the paper. Ink hashmarks and pointillism are used in areas of red to create interesting shading values, and in the bottom right, Eggleston leaves negative space, leaving the viewer to wonder if the red shape is a heart or an apple.
