Exquisite Pair of 19th Century Chinese Famille Rose Medallion Porcelain Hexagon Jars lidded tea caddies– Qianlong Marked
Both pieces and their lids are richly decorated with painted garden scenes, birds, butterflies, pomegranates, and peonies on each side.
This stunning pair of Early 19th Century Chinese Rose Medallion porcelain hexagonal jars is a rare find and an exceptional addition to any collection. Measuring 13 inches in height and 9 inches in width, these large and beautifully crafted jars / lidded tea caddies are in excellent condition, with vibrant and intricate decoration that has been preserved remarkably well over time. The vibrant colors and fine detailing make these pieces an extraordinary example of Chinese export porcelain from the Qing Dynasty.
These jars/ lidded tea caddies are decorated in the iconic Famille Rose Medallion style, with delicate floral and bird motifs highlighted by intricate gold gilt accents. The six main panels of the jars feature hand-painted scenes of birds, pomegranates, and other elements of nature, representing prosperity, beauty, and longevity. The delicate butterflies and gold scrollwork against the soft white ground create a captivating design that adds to the elegance of the piece. The alternating gold-gilt and floral panels on the shoulder add depth and sophistication, making these jars stand out in any setting.
The hexagonal form is a rare and distinctive feature, making these jars highly desirable for collectors. The Qianlong mark in underglaze iron-red on the base of each jar indicates their production during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1736–1795), though it is important to note that such marks were sometimes added to later pieces to honor the Qianlong period. The overall craftsmanship and high-quality porcelain suggest that these jars were most likely produced in the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen, known for their fine porcelain work.
Famille Rose porcelain, introduced in the early 18th century, is known for its soft pastel hues, delicate overglaze enamels, and the use of gold gilding. The combination of these elements creates a refined, elegant aesthetic that appeals to both imperial tastes and the international export market. The inclusion of traditional motifs such as pomegranates, birds, butterflies, and flowers adds both symbolic and artistic value, with each design carrying deep cultural meaning.
This pair of jars is a rare example of the finest craftsmanship of the Qing Dynasty, and their size, condition, and design make them a remarkable and valuable addition to any collection of Chinese export porcelain. The absence of any cracks, chips, repairs, or wear to the enamel or gilding ensures their pristine quality, further enhancing their desirability.
