Sevres Porcelain Ormolu Tazza, 1838 Hunting Royal Service of King Louis Philippe
This exceptional Sèvres porcelain ormolu-mounted tazza, dating to 1838, forms part of the renowned Hunting Service commissioned by King Louis-Philippe I of France. Created by the esteemed Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, this rare piece reflects the elegance and sophistication associated with French royal commissions during the 19th century.
The wide porcelain dish features intricate hand-painted hunting scenes, heraldic medallions, and mythical creatures, all framed by rich gilded Greek key patterns and vibrant floral scrollwork. At the center, a finely detailed gilded starburst motif radiates with symmetrical filigree patterns, reflecting the precision and artistry of Sèvres porcelain painters.
The tazza is elevated by an exquisite gilt bronze ormolu base, showcasing Rococo-style scrolls, acanthus leaves, and garland motifs, all finely chased and gilded to the highest standard. The ormolu work complements the porcelain’s vibrant enamel colors, making this piece a striking example of French royal decorative arts.
Part of the initial order of Louis Philippe from the Hunting Service King Louis Philippe, commissioned for Chateau de Fontainebleau.
The design was conceived by Jean-Charles-Francois Leloy.
The tazza bears the initials of Louis Philippe in three vignettes. The underside is marked with the blue Sevres date mark for 1838. Raiseon on a finely cast draped tripartite base.
An example of this service is at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
