Massimo Campigli (1895–1971).
Campigli was a major figure in 20th-century Italian modernism. Though born in Germany, he lived much of his life in Italy and France, and was deeply involved in avant-garde circles in Milan and Paris.
Campigli’s style is distinctively symbolic and archaic, often inspired by:• Etruscan art
• Ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean frescoes
• Cubism and Metaphysical painting
His paintings typically feature:
• Stylized female figures with rigid, mask-like faces
• Muted, earthy color palettes: ochres, browns, faded reds
• Architectural symmetry and repetitive motifs
• A sense of stillness and solemnity, almost ritualistic
Despite being modern, his work exudes an ancient, timeless quality a kind of modern primitivism rooted in classical ideals.
This work is a photolithograph likely his last painting, created for the “Lo Zodiaco” series. Campigli died suddenly in Saint-Tropez on May 31, 1971, just before he could sign the art works. As a result, each print includes a printed signature, with the actual signature in pencil added by his son, Nicola Campigli. That adds a poignant and historical value to this piece. This lithograph is numbered 2887.
