Rick Griffin (1944–1991) was an American artist best known for his iconic psychedelic rock posters, underground comix, and surf culture illustrations. Emerging from Southern California’s 1960s surf scene, he gained early recognition through Surfer magazine with his comic strip “Murphy.” Griffin later became a key figure in San Francisco’s counterculture, producing vivid, mind-bending poster art for bands like The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, and Jefferson Airplane. A founding contributor to Zap Comix, he blended surrealism, typography, and spiritual symbolism. Griffin’s legacy continues to influence graphic design, music art, and underground comics.
