A classic Late Victorian Britannia metal mustard pot by James Dixon & Sons, one of the most important British metal manufacturers of the 19th century. This elegant example features a gracefully scrolled handle with an integrated thumb rest, a refined and functional design typical of high-quality English tableware from the period.
The underside is clearly marked with James Dixon’s & Sons, Sheffield 564, along with the firm’s trumpet and banner mark, confirming its English origin and authenticity. This model was produced between approximately 1850 and 1899, during the height of Victorian dining culture, when mustard pots were a staple of the well-appointed table.
Crafted in Britannia metal, a superior pewter alloy prized for its smooth silvery finish and durability, the composition typically consists of approximately 92 percent tin, 6 percent antimony, and 2 percent copper. James Dixon & Sons were especially renowned for their mastery of this material and played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution as leading producers of refined domestic wares.
This example is missing its original lid and spoon, which is reflected in the condition and makes it ideal for display, decorative use, or completion by a collector.
