Large Vintage Chinese Hand Painted Ceramic Ceremonial Dou Vessel W/Flowers & Butterflies
This is a beautiful vintage decorative Chinese ceremonial dou vessel that is made of heavy porcelain that has has been hand painted with florals and butterflies. This features a light burnt umber brown background with green foliage and flowers and butterflies in blue, yellow, pink, and orange. This is a large piece at 12" high, 7" wide, and weighing 4 lbs. Excellent condition, no damage.
The dou served as a vessel for displaying and serving food, especially grains and non-meat dishes, during ceremonial banquets and ritual offerings.
It typically consists of a circular bowl supported on a short stem rising from a flaring base, with a shallow bowl serving as a lid.
While originally made of ceramic or lacquer, the bronze dou became popular during the middle and late Zhou dynasty (c. 900–256/255 BC).
