This Murano Millefiori Art Glass Vase attributed to designer Anzolo Fuga is a rare and visually stunning piece that showcases exquisite floral patterns in a vibrant multicolor design. Handmade in Italy, this original art glass vase exudes artistic flair with its opaque, high gloss finish and decorative features. Standing at 11" tall and 7" wide, this vase is a unique and elegant addition to any home, perfect for those who appreciate abstract art and artisanal craftsmanship.
Crafted with care, this is a vintage piece that is hand blown, as are all Murano creations. The hand blown glass technique gives the piece a unique texture and depth and is produced by master glassmakers who are world-renowned for their beautiful craftsmanship.
The Murano story starts in Italy - famous for its amazing waterways, architecture and art - and dates to the days of Attila the Hun who ruled from 434-453 when Altino on the Adriatic coast of southern Italy was invaded. Citizens migrated first to the small marshy Venetian Island of Torcello, then to Murano, where glass making began in the 16th century against all odds.
According to Italy Magazine, "The fact that the Venetian lagoon is a series of small islands with absolutely none of the natural resources required to make glass — like sand, soda, and ash from trees (along with trees needed to burn in the furnaces) — makes this a very unlikely success story. Every ingredient needed to be hauled and sourced from the mainland. This remains the case today."
"The isolation and concentration of the glass furnaces in Murano is part of what created the perfect setting to evolve glassmaking from practical production to the artform of today. The discovery of how to make clear glass by Angelo Barovier in the 16th century was a turning point, as Murano became the only exporter of mirrors in Europe. The glass formulas — secrets of how to produce the colors — were passed down generation to generation in handwritten notebooks. Glass can often be dated by the colors used, as new minerals became known throughout the centuries."
This is a true statement piece and one to be cherished for generations!
According to Life in Italy, Authentic Murano glass is made only on the island of Murano and the use of different materials is what creates its unique appearance and artistry. Choose Authentic Murano vs items labeled Murano Style. Items labeled Murano Style are NOT Authentic Murano. And beware if you see the words “Vetro realizzato secondo la tecnica dei maestri muranesi.” The meaning is “glass made according to the technique of Murano masters,” therefore the glass is not true Murano.
No matter where you admire its beauty, this stunning Anzolo Fuga vase is sure to garner conversation and take center stage. Enjoy!
Also, according to Incollect:
Anzolo Fuga was born in 1914 and came from one of the most distinguished and oldest Murano glass families. He studied at the Istituto d’Arte di Venezia and later, between 1955 and 1968, designed for one of the most important glass houses in Murano. He passed away in 1988 leaving an extensive legacy of Murano glass highly sought today.
