Antique Japanese Satsuma-Style Vase with Hydrangea & Butterfly Motif 16 inches Tall
Meiji Period (Late 19th – Early 20th Century)
These exquisite Japanese Satsuma vases, standing 16 inches tall with a 5.5-inch width, embodies the refined artistry of Meiji-era ceramics. They feature a beautifully hand-painted hydrangea and butterfly motif, symbolizing beauty and transformation in Japanese culture.
This elegant Pair of Japanese Satsuma porcelain vases are finely crafted decorative pieces featuring a classic bottle shape with a narrow neck and gently flaring rim. The color gradient transitions from rich brown at the top to soft tan and cream at the base, enhancing the delicate clusters of white hydrangea blossoms, highlighted with 24k gold accents. The hydrangea clusters are painted in soft white hues with golden centers, complemented by delicate brown and beige leaves. The butterflies, meticulously detailed in earthy tones with gold highlights, add elegance and movement to the composition.
Intricate 24k gold geometric borders embellish both the top and bottom sections of the vase.
Top Border: An ornate geometric pattern with moriage (raised enamel) detailing, featuring tiny enamel dots in peach, tan, and white, framed in gold—a hallmark of fine Satsuma pottery.
Bottom Border: A gold-accented diamond and floral motif, adding symmetry and balance.
Markings & Origin:
The bases bear a Qianlong (乾隆) four-character mark in black ink. While this mark references the Qianlong Emperor of China (1736–1795), it is likely apocryphal, as was common in Japanese export wares of the Meiji period (1868–1912). Many Satsuma pieces for the Western market carried Chinese reign marks to appeal to collectors.
Condition:
Good antique condition, with minor wear to the enamel and gold detailing, particularly near the rim, consistent with age.
No visible cracks or structural damage.
Authentic Meiji-era Satsuma vases with intricate hand-painted designs and gold detailing are highly collectible.
These vases are truly a stunning representation of Japanese artistry, perfect for collectors of Satsuma pottery or as a statement decorative pieces.
