Signed by the artist Russell Sully. This talented painter, Sully, according to the antique art dealer in France from whom we acquired this painting was a very close friend of Joan Miró.
Russell Sully is said to have attended the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France and quickly adopted a painting style and technique of rivaling that of Dali, Picasso, and surrealism works similar to Joan Miró.
École des Beaux-Arts, in full École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-arts, school of fine arts founded (as the Académie Royale d’Architecture) in Paris in 1671 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, minister of Louis XIV; it merged with the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture (founded in 1648) in 1793. The school offered instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, and engraving to students selected by competitive examination; since 1968, architecture is no longer taught there.
The Surrealist movement itself was influenced by the unconscious mind, where reality and dreams would be combined into a new language. The various members accepted this, but would have a different way of visualising it, and Miró's approach would make use of simple shapes which together formed abstract compositions. He would also make use of the bright colour palette that came from his Spanish upbringing, and this is inherent in the work of many artists from this region. In order to truly understand his paintings, we must decipher the various components which were reused across compositions in order to go beyond the pure aesthetic enjoyment of this artist's work. Miro also saw existing artistic styles as a part of the establishment, and he famously declared war on all that had gone before.
This Joan Miró Style Abstract Composition that would enhance any setting.
