Set of two costela lounge chairs bij m. Eisler and c. Hauner, brazil, 1950's the costela chair by martin eisler and carlo hauner is a well-known piece of brazilian modernist design, originally created in the 1950s. It features a distinctive structure with curved wooden slats that form the seat and backrest, supported by a black metal frame. This design gives the chair a sculptural and open look, while also ensuring flexibility and comfort. The wide, rib-like slats follow the contours of the body, making it both functional and visually striking. Eisler and hauner, founders of forma, were key figures in shaping mid-century brazilian design, blending european influences with local materials and craftsmanship. The costela chair reflects this approach, with its modular construction and combination of industrial and organic elements. This set has been carefully restored while maintaining the integrity of the original design. The chairs were previously entirely painted brown, covering both the wood and metal and obscuring their original character. During restoration, the paint was meticulously removed to reveal the natural materials. The wooden slats were refinished, restoring their rich, warm grain. The metal frame was brought back to its original finish, with subtle traces of age preserved. This contrast between wood and metal highlights the designers' original intent and brings the piece back to life. The warm wood tone contrasts with the sleek metal frame, emphasizing the light yet sturdy nature of the structure. A collectible example of mid-century brazilian furniture, the costela chair remains a sought-after piece due to its timeless design and historical significance in the evolution of modern seating.
