Georgia Totto O'Keeffe ( 1887 - 1986 ) is an American Modernist painter. She is best known for her beautiful, engaging poetic paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keffee has been recognized as the " Mother of American Modernism ". Artworks by O'Keeffe are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums worldwide.
Extravagantly designed and printed, this beautiful volume provides the first comprehensive view at this pivotal period in O'Keeffe's life and art spanning the years 1916 to 1932. Throughout the 1920's, she moved with ease between the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the pastoral beauty of Upstate New York, deeply inspired by both environments. Her output was prodigious and varied in subject matter though always consistent in style.
These were the years of her giant flower paintings, intimate landscapes, monumental city views, and sublime abstractions. Included are some of her most beloved masterpieces, as well as many previously unpublished works. A major critical essay by Bram Dijkstra completes this landmark book with a groundbreaking analysis of O'Keefe's work, and of her singular place in the art and culture of The Modern Era.
