This wonderful antique artifact from Meiji Japan was hand carved from wood to create a stylistic depiction of a swimming carp. Jizai Kagi were used to hang pots over a fire, the chain and hook system allowed people to easily adjust the height of the pot. The bamboo pole has a very unique transition between dark and lighter brown color. The end of the pole ends in a really cool burl pattern.
Fish are commonly found as the handle section of Jizai Kagi due to them being commonly used in a lot of Japanese dishes. They often represent abundance of food and preservatives.
This Jizai Kagi is hanging on the inside of a ladder in some of these photos, in order to properly display the fish sculpture with the hook and chain mechanism.
The edges of the fish are slightly scrapped in protruding areas. bamboo has some scratches and is split in some areas. In good condition.
