The color is a rich, glossy chocolate with a hint of red. Its heavy, thick earthenware has an almost Dutch oven feel to it, but I don't imagine it would work as well. The portions that are unglazed- lid edges and base are still waterproof and sealed. There's a tiny chip in the lid, but it doesn't look like it would make a difference in it's use, as it's already on an unsealed portion. It really does have a rock solid feel to it. See less
