Wonderful, rare vintage 1920s … labelled stepladder brand … by Hincher Manufacturing Co., of Washington, Indiana.
Patent dates of 1913 and 1922 on label.
Designed as a safety ladder and stool - Goodform Stooladder !
Most of the wood appears to be hardwood maple. The red “backboard” is old growth pine.
The heavy iron strapping hardware on it is in fine shape. It, and the vintage silvery screws and nails, provide a nice contrast to the glowing old growth grain and red paint remnants.
It is functional, as a stool, for “lightweights.” Or, as a quick and easy portable end table.
Hincher Manufacturing, Co.
of Washington, Indiana built these stepladders in the early 1900s. And there appear to be only a couple of “these” out there on the market.
The vintage original label is even surprisingly, largely intact; the red “Goodform” name in cursive, is a bit faded.
It quite easily and instantly folds up and collapses (and incredibly so) with just one hand … and “claps shut” in a millisecond … to lean snugly up against the wall … or to carry it … with a user-friendly concave handgrip on the underside of the seat, that is comfortably grasped with one hand.
Expertly designed.
When against the wall, the two stair treads almost sit level to the ground. So if you were careful, you could situate a couple little green plants on the stair step treads … for display….
It is so handsome, it would also look great “hanging” on the wall if you wanted to showcase it. And, then pop it off the wall, if you actually need a spot for your guest’s can of beer.
It has 3 recent coats of polyurethane, so the seat top will wear well.
When we had it professionally refinished, exposing most of the original wood and its grain, we intentionally left part of the vintage red paint bleeding through and a splatter or two of green paint.
The steel crossbar supports were cleaned, refinished, and oiled.
The red backboard on it appears to be original, but we are not certain. It appears to be a nice sheet of old growth pine. It’s a very cool contrasting touch.
Fabulous grain, color, and patina.

A few character saw cuts. The red backboard has a surface split inside it, following the grain. We left on the seat, without filling, what appears to be a blemish from a cigarette burn on the seat. (I’m guessing it was from a non-filter Camel; but just guessing.) There’s also a smaller surface hole that is pictured, in the front right area of the seat, as you face the steps. The seat has a slight … maybe quarter inch decline … which is not unusual on these old ladder pieces … as the picture with the level illustrates. (If the seat being slightly tilted is an issue, one could very easily and quickly, take a quarter inch off the bottom of the back legs…to perfectly level it out.) The top stair step has a small chink out of the back edge, that is hardly noticeable; zoom in on pic # 7. less
