Dieter Crumbiegel was trained in painting in Kassel with Fritz Winter and Marie-Louise von Rogister - two important German representatives of the Informel - and taught ceramics with Walter Propp. He developed into one of the most important German ceramicists from the 1960s to 1970s before turning to painting in the mid-1980s. In addition to his varied teaching activities, he was a regular member of the jury when awarding important ceramics awards and is considered the founder of the Krefeld School for Ceramics and Design. In addition to all of these activities, he continued to create ceramic objects in his own studio, which often border on the transition from everyday objects to sculpture.
