**Description**
A wonderfully characterful early 20th-century British animal portrait depicting a chestnut-and-white lurcher standing proudly within an English country landscape.
Signed “J. Warnes” lower right and dating provisionally to circa 1910, the painting captures the elegance and alert character of this quintessentially British sporting dog.
The lurcher stands almost in full lateral profile upon a country pathway, allowing its long, graceful proportions to dominate the composition. Its head turns towards the viewer with an engaging direct gaze.
Tall green grasses flank the animal, beyond which lie warm golden fields beneath an atmospheric blue-grey sky filled with softly modelled clouds.
The resulting composition combines the traditional characteristics of British sporting portraiture with considerable decorative charm.
**Art-Historical Context**
The painting belongs to the British sporting and animal-painting tradition that flourished throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
Its subject has particular resonance with the work of Samuel John Carter (1835–1892), the respected British animal and sporting painter whose oeuvre encompassed dogs, horses, deer and other sporting subjects.
No specific Carter prototype for the present composition has been identified. The work is therefore conservatively catalogued as being “in the tradition of Samuel John Carter” rather than directly “after Samuel John Carter.”
**The Rowney Canvas**
An especially interesting feature is the surviving G. Rowney & Co., London, “Quality F” stencil on the reverse.
Historic research into Rowney artists' materials establishes that Quality F prepared canvas appeared in the firm's catalogue from 1892 onwards and remained in use during the early decades of the 20th century.
The manufacturer's mark therefore provides useful independent evidence consistent with the painting's proposed circa 1910 date.
**Artist**
The lower-right signature appears to read “J. Warnes.”
The painter's identity has not presently been established with sufficient documentary certainty to attach a formal biography. The work is consequently catalogued as British School, early 20th century, signed “J. Warnes.”
**Provenance**
