Created in China during the Han Dynasty, this ancient terracotta sculpture showcases a dog standing in an alert position. Referred to as a Mingqi, this terracotta dog was likely a funerary object buried with the deceased. Ancient Chinese believed dogs were able to protect them from evil and help them enjoy a peaceful afterlife. Presenting a wonderful weathered patina with mineral deposits on the surface and traces of original pigmentation, this Han Dynasty terracotta dog Mingqi circa 202 BC-200 AD will make for an excellent decorative addition to any home, perhaps displayed atop a console table, commode or credenza.
