Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, artworks, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. Glorifying the common as the beautiful. His technique utilizing a silkscreen method combined with hand finishing in a signature palette of vibrant color hues make the work stand on its own and loved by millions.
Between 1977 and 1986, Warhol created six series of paintings that reveal a bent for painting in Abstract patterns. Thirty-six examples of his Abstract works, together with a selection of stills from his early films, are presented here for the first time. In his Oxidations, Shadows, Eggs, Yarns, Rorschachs, and Camouflages, Warhol relies on the painterly techniques associated with Abstract Expressionism. In these paintings he artfully explores the unconscious and the possibilities of gestural expression.
The exhibition was arranged by Thomas Kellein, director of The Kunsthalle Base. In his text Kellein describes how Warhol's lifelong insatiable craving for a mechanical form of production led, late in the artist's career, to the creation of his Abstract works. Only after he had become a Pop Art master and cult figure, did Warhol turn to Abstract painting in an attempt to elude the pictorial world he himself had created.
