1925 Scottish Art Deco Bronze Newfoundland Dog With Historic Inscription
An Unusual British Canine Bronze Inscribed “Help Scottish K.C. 1925”
An evocative Scottish Art Deco bronze Newfoundland-type dog dating to 1925, combining strong decorative appeal with intriguing canine and social history.
The dog stands upon a streamlined stepped bronze plinth, with richly textured modelling defining its profuse coat, broad head and powerful physique.
Its naturally developed dark brown patina is particularly attractive, with warm bronze tones showing through raised portions of the modelling.
The most intriguing detail is the inscription “HELP Scottish K.C. 1925”.
“Scottish K.C.” is considered highly likely to denote the Scottish Kennel Club. The meaning of “HELP” has not yet been conclusively established but raises the possibility that the bronze was associated with a charitable, fundraising or canine-welfare initiative.
The Newfoundland itself was one of the most celebrated lifesaving dogs of the 19th and early 20th centuries, internationally admired for its strength and remarkable ability in water.
The sculpture therefore works equally well as an attractive Art Deco animal bronze and as a fascinating conversation piece with an unresolved historical story.
Provenance
Gorringes, Lewes, East Sussex, 3 March 2025, Lot 427.
Original Gorringes auction label survives beneath the sculpture, identifying it as “A bronze of a Newfoundland Terrier”.
