Artist Biography
Florence Millner (Flossie) Arnold (1900 - 1994) was active/lived in California, Arizona. She is known for Hard edge abstract painting, teaching.
Florence Arnold, also known as Flossie, was born in Prescott, Arizona on September 16, 1900. She attended Mills College in Oakland, California earning a degree in music. This was followed by studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she received a B.A. Degree.By 1923 she was a resident of Fullerton; employed as a teacher of music, art and social studies. In 1950, at age 50, she enrolled in an art class at Fullerton College. She quickly advanced as an artist and was immediately drawn to non objective painting. After receiving encouragement and critiques from artist Karl Benjamin, she attended painting classes at the Claremont Graduate School.During this period she discovered her intuitive talent for creating engaging geometric shapes and biomorphic forms. These bold shapes and forms became the center of her modern art paintings. Some of her works were monochromatic and others were quite colorful.Throughout the mid 1950s Arnold began receiving notoriety for the works she exhibited in California museum exhibitions and in local art shows. In the late 1950s Los Angeles Times art critic Jules Langsner included her as one of the key Southern California artists contributing to what he called the Hard-Edge School of painters. Other artists in this group included Lorser Feitelson, John McLaughlin, Frederick Hammersley, Karl Benjamin, and Helen Lundeberg. For about a 10 year period between 1959 and 1969 the California Hard Edge School of painters exhibited together in America and Europe. From this exposure Arnold received some 60 additional one person exhibitions. At first Arnold painted with both oils on canvas and watercolor on paper, but from 1955 on, she focused on painting with oils on canvas. In the 1970s she also produced fine art prints. During the latter part of her career she continued painting and was active in the local community helping children discover their artistic talents and setting up community art programs.
