Biography of the author:
Born in Montreal, Canada, Renée Gagnon lives and works in Lisbon, where she settled in 1970. The last decades of her life were dedicated to film, she even worked with Andy Warhol. However, his training is in Fine Arts, with a Diploma of Painting of the School of Fine Arts of Montreal and another of the School of the Louvre in Paris, where he trained in the Grande Chaumière with the painter Aujame.
In 1970, already in Lisbon, she begins to focus on Screen Printing Techniques on a large screen in Lisbon. Between 1972-1974 she lived in Luanda, Angola. In 1975 she began to study systematically the type of construction of the Musseques* with a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
She elaborates several publications on the subject of the Musseques* and donates to the State of Angola all her works (texts and photographs) on the phenomenon. Since 1976, she has signed several publications, participated in seven solo exhibitions, from Lisbon to Zurich, and more than ten collectives. Her works are represented in the collections of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Júlio Resende Foundation, the Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the Secretary of State for Culture, Valor Sul Lisboa, the Presidency of the Republic of Angola and the City Hall of Luanda and Lobito in Angola.
*Musseques are informal settlements in Angola, mostly associated with the sprawling slums around the capital, Luanda.
