A rare excellent vintage monochrome print after bister wash drawing "Ecce" by Victor Hugo (1802-1885). The drawing was made in connection with the execution of John Charles Tapner, a robber and murderer, whose life Victor Hugo wanted to save by an appeal for mercy. Later, in 1859, he made several copies of the drawing on the occasion of the execution of John Brown, the abolitionist, and had one of the copies reprinted in mezzotint by Paul Chenay.
Signed in the print: "Victor Hugo Jersey 1854". Comes from a rare art folio published in Budapest in 1959. Printed on one side of high quality heavy paper. Copy on back is related to another piece in the folio. Excellent condition - minor edge wear, never framed.
