Original work with the artist’s stamp on the back
A major artist of the Swiss minimalist scene, Théodore Bally was born in the canton of Solothurn and grew up and then studied in Basel. He soon settled in Munich and returned to Switzerland to work for a year with Cuno Amiet (1916-1917). Traveling throughout Europe for a long time, he eventually settled in Montreux in 1938 where he continued his pictorial research alone, after having destroyed almost all of his previous work.
After briefly devoting himself to figurative painting, he turned to abstraction and constructivism. Drawings, monotypes, wire reliefs, cut-outs as well as numerous collages sometimes enhanced with gouache in pastel colors were born by the hundreds.
His work was exhibited in museums and galleries in Europe from the early 1950s and he represented Switzerland at the Venice Art Biennale in 1958 with Max Bill.
After 1960, he decided to abandon color to combine elementary shapes and black and white collages.
The publisher Marcel Joray (Éditions du Griffon, Neuchâtel), a great admirer of the artist's work, devoted two volumes to him in his prestigious collection of monographic works on the plastic arts and sculpture of the 20th century in 1964 and 1968.
A large public collection of works by this artist is kept by the Théodore Bally Foundation at the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau.
