Saint Catherine was venerated as, among other things, a protectress of virgins, and she was also the patron saint of spinners in the fabric trade. And we can't help noticing that unmarried women are still referred to sometimes as spinsters, and, yes, that is the derivation of that word. This is a lovely example of popular Latin American religious art. The charm of the spinning figure is compounded by the border of flowers (we think roses) that frame the saint's image.
