Here is a wonderfully handcrafted Folk Art tricycle sculpture, formed entirely from wire and metal and dating to the mid-20th century. The fanciful high-wheel design features an oversized spoked front wheel paired with two smaller rear wheels, giving it the unmistakable character of an early high-wheel bicycle interpreted in miniature.
The details are especially fun, from the individually formed spokes and wrapped-wire construction to the woven saddle, and coiled accents. Best of all are the exaggerated sculptural handlebars, which sweep dramatically above the frame and can be turned from side to side. All three wheels rotate freely, and the tricycle stands securely on its own.
The aged metal surface and wonderfully expressive proportions give the piece a genuine Folk Art, whimsical quality. It has enough presence to work as a small sculpture on a console, bookshelf or tabletop, or liven up a grouping of treasured items.
