Ueli Berger for De Sede, lounge chair, wood, Cognac leather, Switzerland, 1970s. This high-back lounge chair is produced by the Swiss manufacturer De Sede. It features an X-shaped frame made of black lacquered wood, which creates an interesting contrast to the warm, cognac leather. The cushion is upholstered in a patchwork motif, a design choice that adds a touch of whimsy and uniqueness to the chair. De Sede originally started as a saddler's workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, and gradually expanded its focus to creating high-quality leather seating furniture. By 1965, the family-run business evolved into a professional company known as De Sede AG. Their products are meticulously crafted, prioritizing the needs of their owners, resulting in pieces made from the finest materials that ensure durability and comfort. Ueli Berger and his wife, Susi Berger-Wyss, are not just furniture designers. They are the embodiment of a design legacy that spans over 40 years and has left an indelible mark on mid-century modern design. Their work, characterized by geometric shapes and playful artistry, is a testament to their belief that 'only a new idea justifies a new piece of furniture.' In the 1950s, Ueli began his career as an apprentice painter before working with interior designer Hans Eichenberger. After marrying Susi, they designed furniture for several manufacturers, including Victoria-Werke and De Sede. By 1971, Ueli established his studio. The de Sede lounge chair, a creation of Ueli and Susi Berger, has earned its place among the most renowned pieces of furniture. Its tall back, X-shaped frame, and cognac leather upholstery have captivated the hearts of many. This design and its modular seating continue to be a popular choice, a testament to its timeless appeal and enduring quality. The couple was awarded the Swiss Grand Award for Design and showcased their work in museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Their Cloud Lamp, a unique lighting fixture that mimics the shape and texture of a cloud, gained attention in Modern Magazine. Designs such as the Kungfu Regal shelving and Robot Kommode remain highly sought after by collectors. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
