It features an exhibition catalogue monograph survey of the artworks of the artist Alex Katz, accompanied compelling texts authored by Robert Storr, with essays by Lawrence Alloway and James Schuyler.
Alex Katz ( B. 1927 ) is an American Modernist artist of a Jewish background born in Brooklyn New York. Katz is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Often associated with The Pop Art Movement, he began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time has produced a celebrated body of work with expressive power that includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints.
His earliest work took inspiration from various aspects of Mid-Century American culture and society, and over the past five decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of Modern Life. The distinctive poetic portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and economy of line. He uses characteristically wide brushstrokes, large swathes of color, and refined compositions creating a new and distinctive type of Realism in American Art that evokes a cool but seductive emotional response.
Since the 1950's Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions around the world. Artworks by Katz can be found in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
For more than fifty years, Katz has painted a series of portraits of his wife, Ada. This beautifully illustrated book is the first to focus on these iconic paintings, which are unprecedented in their focus on a single figure over many years.
In this volume, leading scholars explore the allure of Ada as a subject and the art-historical importance of Katz's portraits. The author examines Ada's glamorous persona, comparing her to other " goddesses " that have captivated centuries of portrait painters. Featuring the celebrated series of Ada Portraits, this special book demonstrates the cumulative power and enduring delight of Alex Katz's achievement, as well as his devotion to his greatest muse.
This book is illustrated with 66 color and 6 black & white offset lithograph print illustrations. The importance of this volume is further enhanced with an exhibition checklist, selected bibliography, index, and illustration credits.
