The work presented here appears to be a pastel, probably enhanced with pencil, where the material almost entirely saturates the surface. The accumulation of strokes layered into a dense grid, creates an optical vibration effect. The dark mesh doesn’t fully hide the bright colors underneath. Instead, it lets shades of green and pink, bright colors shine through its gaps, creating a mix of opacity and transparency.
Yet, within this graphic mass, a subtle organization emerges. An intense yellow pierces through the hatch network. It is not merely another color—it is light itself. Almost by accident, it reveals the shape of a cross, a presence that surfaces rather than imposes itself. But as the eye adjusts to this shifting structure, another form emerges: a square within a square. Though fragmented by the strokes, this double framing introduces a more rigorous visual architecture, a composition oscillating between the spontaneity of gesture and an underlying order.
One might see a connection to Abstract Expressionism or Op Art in the intensity of the gesture and the perceptual interplay it demands of the viewer. The work is signed in the lower right corner, but the signature remains challenging to decipher, adding another layer of mystery to this enigmatic composition.
