An excellent large vintage period First Edition full-color print of painting "Seascape" (1944) by a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor Georges Braque. Comes from a rare First Limited Edition art folio published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland, in the 1940s. Signed in the print at the lower left corner: "G. Braque". Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 5. Excellent condition - never framed.
Having grown up in Le Havre, Braque has always been something of a beachcomber at heart, and the delicately muffled tones of the northern seas may well account for his particular fondness for grey, luminous subdued colors. Even in this canvas of 1944, the blue of the boats, re-echoed only a shade more deeply in the blue of the sea, almost seems to bathe in the tremulous light of a nordic dawn.
